The key to a safe and unforgettable Great Walk experience is having the right gear. The weather in New Zealand’s Alpine environment can be unpredictable, so you need to be prepared for all situations.
Our small team of born-and-bred kiwis have grown up in the outdoors (including the youngest and he’s only 3!), so we’ve handpicked hire gear we know works, and that will enhance your Great Walk. Tried and tested, all of our gear is quality, lightweight, warm and practical, so you have the best outdoor experience possible. We’ll also deliver to your local accommodation before your hike, saving you the hassle of lugging all your gear from home for just a small part of your holiday.
In some cases, we can hire individual items like sleeping bags, tents etc when packaged with one of our other products (i.e. Car relocation) however we encourage you to hire our essentials package – so we can sleep at night knowing you have the right gear out there!
This is the hire gear we consider to be essential for your walk, that for your own comfort and safety, you can’t go without.
● Backpack + pack cover + liner: 50-75 litres and gender-specific. Osprey brand that’s high-quality, lightweight with an adjustable harness and waist strap.
● Sleeping bag + sleeping bag liner: Sea to Summit brand that’s comfortable with great warmth to weight ratio. Most of our bags are the Trek TkII model.
● Rain Jacket: With rain and a breathability rating of at least 10,000mm. Brands we stock include Marmot, The North Face and Stoney Creek.
● Cooking/Eating Equipment: Sea to Summit pot, plates, mugs, cutlery plus kitchen tidy kit.
● Head Lamp: LED Lenser
● First Aid Kit

● Hiking Poles: Black Diamond expandable hiking poles. 2 per set.
● Sun Cream: Essential for hiking in New Zealand summer to help prevent sunburn. The brand we use is high-performance SPF 44 with a user-friendly balance of application ease and durability.
● Personal Locator Beacon: If you want to carry a PLB for your own safety and fast rescue assistance, we are happy to arrange for a small service fee. You can also hire these directly from the Charitable Trust operating this service in Wanaka, Queenstown, Te Anau, Manapouri and Milford Sound.
Premium Gear includes all of our essentials items, plus a few extra items which are nice to have, especially if you’re new to staying in a wilderness hut with no electricity or shower facilities.

● Cooking/Eating Equipment: Sea to Summit pot, plates, mugs, cutlery plus kitchen tidy kit.
● Thermos: Perfect for hot drinks when you need a pick me up.

● Easyhike care package: Insect repellent, sanitiser + earplugs (must-haves for any hike!)
