Conical Peak a short side track off the Routeburn Track gives superb views of the Hollyford Valley through to Lake McKerrow and beyond to Martins Bay

I have walked the Routeburn Track a few times, but for one reason or another I hadn’t been up Conical Peak until just the other day – it took my breath away!  A kiwi born and bred, living amongst the mountains in Glenorchy, I call this place my home, and really love it when I discover a new favourite spot so close to home!

It was going to be another beautiful day so I started early and got to the Harris Saddle at 9am – before the sun, the wind had just picked up a little and it seemed as though the light layer of clouds (due to the cooler overnight temperatures) was just about to disappear.

As it happened I was at the top of Conical Peak for an hour or so, waiting/longing for the clouds to move on and show me the elusive views I knew were there and was determined to see.  The anticipation was all part of the warm up I guess and I wasn’t disappointed, glimpses between passing clouds seemed to be a tease at the time, but thinking back it was magical.  Looking up the Hollyford Valley to the Divide, down the valley towards the Tasman Sea and back over the mountains surrounding Lake Harris I really felt so privilaged, as if I was in the front row of a show which was just for me.

The Department of Conservation website describes Conical Hill:

A short, steep climb from the Harris Saddle up Conical Hill gives superb views of the Hollyford Valley through to Lake McKerrow and beyond to Martins Bay and the Tasman Sea. Allow 1–2 hours for the return trip. Be aware that snow and ice can sometimes make this trip hazardous early and late into the Great Walks season.
